Beware the Dangers of Cat Fines

Image: CMT

Horror stories frequently circle the maritime industry portraying tales of onboard damages induced by catalytic fines, or cat fines, used in oil processing. All cat fines that remain in fuel oil after centrifugal separation have the potential to cause abrasive wear and damage to the engine. Studies of high cylinder and piston ring wear cases show that cat fines particles embedded in the liner surface cause nearly 90 percent of the wear, leading some engine manufacturers to limit the maximum allowance of cat fines entering the engine during the combustion process to 10-15 ppm and below.

Eliminating Cat Fines to Marine Diesel Engines

One can assume that P&I Clubs and shipowners would be very interested in preventing catastrophic Cat Fines damage to diesel engines. Cat Fines have been damaging marine diesel engines for more than 50 years. Only recently, with the increased use of Low Sulphur Fuel Oils has the catastrophic damage from Cat Fines increased drastically. For decads, centrifuges builders have been searching for the latest solution. The only way to prevent the accelerated wear of Cat Fines is to (positively) remove them before the diesel engine. Over the years, many companies have tried, and many have failed – until now. JB Filtration, LLC said it has developed, long term tested and documented a positive solution to Cat Fines Removal from the HFOs.

New Test Kit Detects Cat Fines Onboard

Image: Parker Kittiwake

A new Cat Fines Test Kit has been launched by asset control and protection technology provider Parker Kittiwake. The onboard test identifies the presence of abrasive silicon and aluminum catalytic fines, which can become embedded into engine components and cause abrasive wear, causing irreversible damage to a vessel’s fuel system if left undetected. When fuel is stored for extended periods of time, cat fines – leftovers from the refinery cracking process – settle out of the fuel and build up as sediment in storage tanks.
