New Exhaust Gas Sensor Technology Goes to Market
With market testing now complete, new exhaust gas sensor technology from remote marine data monitoring company Azurtane Limited will go to market. From its new company headquarters in Southampton, Azurtane will market sensor technology for ships developed with support by the UK government under the Innovate UK program. Azurtane began trialing its exhaust gas sensing equipment with Southampton-based ferry company Red Funnel in 2013. The project involved second-by-second measurement of the fuel used on each voyage of the Red Jet 4 Hi-Speed ferry service between Southampton and Cowes.
Association for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems
The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association (EGCSA) was launched March 30 to provide a sustainable operating environment within the marine industry for exhaust gas cleaning system technologies. The EGCSA has been formed from companies and organizational divisions that manufacture exhaust gas cleaning systems for the marine sector. The founder companies of the association are Aalborg Industries, Clean Marine, Krystallon, Marine Exhaust Solutions, and Wartsila. ClassNK Updates Scrubbers Guidelines
Classification society ClassNK said it has released the second version of its Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. Based on the first version Guidelines released in August 2014, the latest version includes the results of joint research and testing on actual Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. In an effort to reduce SOx and PM emissions from ships, MARPOL Annex VI limits the maximum allowable amount of sulphur contents of fuel oil used onboard globally, as well as place stricter requirements in geographically defined Emission Control Areas (ECA). Last October it was determined that stricter global sulphur limit of 0.5 percent is to be started on 1 January 2020.
Sea Sentry to Monitor Bulk Carrier's SOX Scrubbers
The CTG Sea Sentry is a wash water monitoring system which monitors both the sensor inlet and outlet of wet exhaust gas scrubber systems. CTG has to date supplied monitoring systems globally to the marine industry’s leading providers of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems and announced the recent installation of the new improved Sea Sentry on board a major bulk carrier to monitor a newly installed SOx Scrubber system. DNV GL Approvals for SAACKE Scrubbers
Classification increases planning certainty for exhaust gas scrubber operators. The classification society DNV GL has certified the SAACKE exhaust gas scrubber based on soot separation using a dry process. This ensures that the innovative system, which was initially installed in 2013 on the tanker MT Levana, owned by the Carl Büttner shipping company, can now be operated without restriction. "Many scrubbers manufactured by market competitors currently operate with special permits. This means that the operator is exposed to the risk that the investment may not pay off.
China's Yangzijiang Triples Q3 Profits
Chinese Shipbuilding Group Yangzijiang posted a third quarter net profit of $130 million which is more than a tripling of its profits in the third quarter last year. The group also managed to exceed its target of $1.5 billion in annual orders. This caused the share price to hit a six year high at $1.64 and the group to increase its annual target for orders to $2 billion for this year and and $2 billion for next year. The group expects to construct and deliver up to 50 vessels each this year and the next in spite of increasing steel prices and the Renminbi appreciating against the dollar. Plans to increase capacity were announced that will allow the builder to attract more value added contracts.
ClassNK's Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems
Leading classification society ClassNK announced that it has released Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. These guidelines cover class safety requirements as well as safety requirements stipulated in the IMO guidelines. The MARPOL Convention Annex VI has placed phased limits on the maximum allowable amount of sulphur in fuel oils used by vessels globally, as well as stricter requirements in geographically defined emission control areas. Under the regulation, more stringent limits will be enforced over time. In the face of these more stringent limits, the industry has begun to look towards alternative solutions to the expensive low sulphur content fuel oils currently required by the regulations.
Langh Ship Scrubber Receives Class Approval
Langh Ship received on July 17, 2014 final class approval from Germanischer Lloyd for its exhaust gas cleaning system on m/s Laura, a 1996-built a 6,500 DWT general cargo vessel equipped with a 6 MW main engine. “The technology had already been accepted earlier, but now the documentation is also finalized,” said Reino Verosaari, Senior Technical Adviser. Langh Ship is a shipping company that has developed its own closed loop scrubber. The system uses caustic soda to neutralize the SOx in the exhaust gas and cleans the process water so that it can be led to the sea.
Wärtsilä Scrubbers for Korean Ferry Newbuild
Wärtsilä said it has been contracted to supply its exhaust gas cleaning system for a new Korean ferry being built for Weidong Ferry at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. The system will consist of two 13 MW Open Loop V-SOx Scrubbers specifically optimized for the new vessel, a 31,000 gross tonnage RoPax ferry to be operated by Weidong Ferry between Korea and China. The contract with Wärtsilä, which was booked in January 2017, will see the first Wärtsilä scrubber system installed where the shipyard, the owners and the vessel's operational area are all in Korea.
Engines Selected for CMA CGM’s LNG Mega Ships
WinGD X-DF engines will power CMA CGM’s record setting containerships. French shipping line CMA CGM has chosen WinGD’s largest, 92 cm bore, dual-fuel low-speed engine to power its series of groundbreaking box ships – presently the largest on order globally, and the first ultra large container vessels with capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The series of nine ultra-large 22,000 TEU capacity containerships will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd.
GEA Heat Exchangers to Present at SMM
GEA Heat Exchangers said it will present its latest innovations at SMM 2014, the maritime-business trade fair for shipbuilding, machinery and marine technology from September 9-12 in Hamburg Germany. The company will exhibit in hall A3, at stand 212, where visitors can become acquainted with a variety of product innovations for maritime operations and offshore applications. In addition to its already proven exhaust gas recirculation coolers (EGR) for four-stroke diesel engines, GEA Heat Exchangers now presents a new model for two-stroke diesel engines in medium and high output ranges.
Suezmax Newbuilds Feature MAN Engines with EGR
Hyundai’s Ship Building Division (HHI-SBD) has finalized a contract for two Suezmax tankers for Turkish shipowner, Ditas Shipping. The 158,000-cubic-meter crude-oil tankers will each be powered by individual MAN B&W 6G70ME-C9.5 two-stroke main-engines that feature integrated Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems. STX France Hosts Double Event for MSC Newbuilds
Shipbuilder STX France hosted a coin ceremony for MSC Bellissima as well as the cutting of first steel for the MSC Cruises’ first Meraviglia-Plus class ship, representing construction milestones for two of the cruise line’s four new ships simultaneously under construction. Case Study: 18-day Exhaust Gas Scrubber Install
Goltens was contracted by a large cruise vessel owner to undertake the installation of two exhaust gas scrubbers on one of its ships to comply with sulfur emissions regulations. The vessel is powered by four GMT/Sulzer 16ZAV40S and two GMT/Sulzer 12ZAV40S diesel electric generating sets. Carnival Corp. to Invest $400m in Scrubber Technology
Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald announced that Carnival will significantly extend its installation of exhaust gas cleaning technology, investing $400m in the coming three years to install the technology on 70 ships across its brand, a significant jump from the 32 announced last year. New Diesel Soot Filtration System
Problems caused by inefficient regeneration of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) can be eliminated with the installation of a SeaClean Soot Filtration System (shown above) by marine exhaust system engineering, design, fabrication and service company DeAngelo Marine Exhaust. The SeaClean system monitors the exhaust gas temperature and varies the power going to the heater element so that exhaust gas temperatures are constant. This allows a DPF to work properly so that collected soot is burnt off at high temperature, leaving only a tiny ash residue.
Bore RoRo Ship to Get DeltaLangh Scrubber System
DeltaLangh has been assigned to deliver Deltamarin Floating Construction Ltd. with an exhaust gas cleaning (scrubber) system to be installed onboard the Ro-Ro vessel M/V Bore Song of Bore Ltd. The delivery consists of a combined closed and open loop scrubber system for 12MW engine output with the patented water treatment and dewatering plant. M/V Bore Song operates in the English Channel which is a part of the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA). From January 2015 all ships operating in the SECA area must limit their emissions to correspond to the use of fuel with a sulphur content of less than 0.1%. With the help of the DeltaLangh scrubber M/V Bore Song will meet these requirements.
Wärtsilä Scrubbers Certified for Sulphur Oxide
After performing successfully in a series of tests, the Wärtsilä sulphur oxides (SOx) scrubber has been granted the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) Compliance Certificate by the classification societies Det Norske Veritas and Germanisher Lloyd. A scrubber is an after treatment technology for cleaning exhaust gases of sulphuric oxides. Wärtsilä's solution is the first ever marine scrubber to be awarded this certification. Prior to the successful Wärtsilä tests, the use of scrubbers as an efficient and cost-effective alternative to the use of low sulphur fuel for reducing SOx emissions from ships, had been questioned. Multi-stream Scrubber for Wilhelmsen ASA Vessel
Wärtsilä Hamworthy, announce an agreement with Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA, the global rolling cargo operator, to retrofit their vessel MV Tamesis with a Krystallon Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS). The systems will remove sulphur and particulates from the exhaust gasses of the vessel's main and auxiliary engines. The multi-stream scrubber system will be the world's largest in order to manage the exhaust gasses produced by the 38,486dwt Mark IV RoRo vessel's combined engine power of 28,000kW.
Wärtsilä Scrubbers for New Japanese Bulk Carriers
Wärtsilä informs it has been contracted to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems for two new 56,000 DWT Handymax bulk carriers being built at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Japan for Tokyo based NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. (NYK BP). The newbuilds will be the first vessels owned or chartered by NYK Group having exhaust gas cleaning systems installed. By fitting the scrubber systems, the ships will be compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) SOx emissions regulations, which come into force in 2020.
MTU Series 2000 Yacht Engine Development
Tognum is to develop its MTU Series 2000 yacht engines to meet forthcoming exhaust gas emission regulations. Tognum is to develop its MTU Series 2000 yacht engines for compliance with US EPA Tier 3 Recreational and IMO Tier III emissions regulations. The new Series 2000 M96 engines will be able to cover outputs up to 2,600 bhp (1,940 kW), at the same time complying with IMO Tier II and EPA Tier 3 regulations using in-engine technology only. Compliance with IMO Tier III will be possible with SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment.

Nearly Half of Interlake Fleet Fit with Scrubbers
The M/V Mesabi Miner has sailed from Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., becoming Interlake Steamship Company’s fourth self-unloading bulk carrier to be outfitted with exhaust gas scrubbers. Interlake became the first U.S.-flag fleet to test freshwater scrubbers on the Great Lakes in April 2015 after pioneering the emission-reduction technology on its M/V Hon. James L. Oberstar. In 2016, the company outfitted its first thousand foot vessel, the M/V James R. Barker, and its 826-foot M/V Lee A. Tregurtha in its second phase of exhaust gas scrubber implementation.
